Now I don’t want to go on the official record for this. However, it is highly rumored. Santa takes that entry list and immediately imports it into his good boy, good girl list. Not on that entry list? Well, you’re taking your Christmas morning fate into your own hands. Why not be safe and just go on and enter the Golden Mile? Remember, there are only a few slots left. We cap out at 300.
Sign up for the Golden Mile here.
Here are the seven top misconceptions about the Golden Mile.
- All money raised goes into Lucky’s Vacation Fund. Not true, although he lobbies for this every year. 100% of all entry fees goes to the Lake Cane Restoration Society, who works very hard to keep this lake swimmable, fishable, and lovable.
- You have to swim to enter the race. No, you can enter, not swim, and all the money will go to the Lake Cane Restoration Society. If you do that, let us know ahead of time that you are not participating so we can increase the number of people we can accept into the actual race, because we are limited to 300. And we’ll be sure to let Santa know what you have done.
- You must wear a swim buoy during the race. No, this is optional. If you are swimming the course for fun, then we encourage you to wear the orange swimming buoy. If you are racing for places in your age group, the top finishes, or team points, you will want to swim without the buoy because it does slow you down. This is a race. It is completely separate from the daily lake swim.
- The race does not count as a Lucky’s Lake swim crossing. Again, not true. We count this as two lake Cane crossings. Ron however, would count it as four or five crossings.
- I can come and swim just for fun without registering as part of the event, just like every other Saturday. No, Nay, Nyet, Nein. Lucky’s Lake Swim does not happen on the day of the Golden Mile. Volunteers can swim the course prior to the event. If you’re not a volunteer or a registered participant, you cannot do the lake swim that morning.
- Alligators are released into the lake two minutes after the last swimmer passes through the start timer. Not true. We release them four minutes after the last swimmers enter the water.
- It is against the rules to pay, bribe, or coerce very fast swimmers onto your team In order to give an advantage to your team’s placement. Again, not true. We actually encourage this behavior..

Cash prizes for the top three overall individuals. $500 cash prize to the top team and trophies for the top three teams (lowest total time for the fastet five teammates, two must be women XX) medals first through third in all age groups . Survivor medallions for all finishers plus we throw in eternal honor and glory.
A big thank you to Scott Weiss, for donating parachute skimmers to help with the restoration of Lake Odell and Lake Floy these small lakes empty into Cane . Scott is a former lake swimmer and inventor and patent holder for the Parachute Skimmer, which is used worldwide for clearing surface debris and vegetation from pools, water parks, and lakes.
