It’s hard to believe Easter is almost here! But then again, maybe not—especially if you’ve noticed the increasing “wetsuit to skin ratio” at the lake. Over the past few weeks, the number of swimmers donning wetsuits has far surpassed the number of “skins” (those brave souls who embrace wild swimming without the so-called “black sausage suits”). These dedicated skins deserve our utmost respect and admiration.
This phenomenon is part of what we call the Lucky’s Lake Swim Wetsuit Paradox. As the water warms from frigid temperatures, the percentage of swimmers wearing wetsuits rises until it peaks at around 82°F. After that, anyone still wearing a wetsuit is either making a political statement or needs psychological counseling. In any case, the abundance of wetsuits in the water signals one thing: spring is here, and Easter is just around the corner!
15th Annual Eat, Pray, Swim Event
If it’s Easter, that can only mean one thing—it’s time for our beloved 15th Annual Eat, Pray, Swim event! This is the only Sunday of the year when we host a Lucky’s Lake Swim. A huge thank-you goes to our spiritual leader, Pastor Tom Welch, for guiding us through this cherished tradition year after year. An A.I. editor clearly wrote the previous sentence and deleted the part about how we have doubled Tom salary every year for the last 15 years.
If you’re new to Eat, Pray, Swim, here’s what to expect:
Event Details:
- When: Easter Sunday (April 20th)
- Arrive before sunrise (sunrise is at 6:55 a.m.).
- Where: Lucky’s Lake Swim
- Family and friends are welcome! You don’t have to swim to attend.
- Offerings/Donations all go to the Edgewood Children’s Ranch.
What to Bring:
- A chair or blanket for seating.
Schedule:
- Sunrise Service (6:55 a.m.):
Pastor Tom Welch will deliver He will give a scintillating sermon and undoubtedly point out many of Lucky’s deficiencies along the way.
- Presentation of the Wendy May Andrew volunteerism award.
- Lake Swim:
- Pancake Breakfast:
Non-swimmers following the sermon can head straight to breakfast and try to eat up all the good food before the swimmers return. Once again, Jay has threatened to serve bratwurst wrapped in pancakes (to Lucky’s consternation), but his sardine breakfast idea has been vetoed by near-unanimous bipartisan agreement.
After the service, those who wish can take a refreshing swim across the lake. Water temperatures are expected to be in the high 70s. Wetsuits (a.k.a. black sausage suits) are welcome, but may have to tolerate some verbal abuse!
When you leave, you’ll feel full both spiritually and gastronomically—or you can miss all the fun and go to church instead. The choice is yours!
Lucky receives an amazing award from Orange County Utilities!
Lucky is the recipient of the Certificate of Merit from Orange County Utilities Employees. He is now officially the “Citizen Ambassador for Job Security for Orange County Water Management Employees”.
Orange County Water Management employees have extended their gratitude for the immense water usage at Lucky’s home, thereby guaranteeing them all job security. Humble and gracious as always, Lucky accepted the award, but gave all the credit to the swimmers that keep leaving the hose in the shower running when they leave in the morning. Lucky points out, “Not only does our running hose mission provide job security, but we are also keeping the lake full— a real win-win.”
Of course, not everyone was happy with Lucky’s honor. Heff complained he should get recognition too because he always adds water to the lake when he swims, sometimes a large amount if the craft beer the night before was particularly tasty. And then there is Jay, the local Lake Swim curmudgeon, who unbelievably thinks we should be conserving water. He is so upset, he wishes to purge Lucky and has even threatened to start playing underwater hockey again so he can make it look like an accident.
Wall of Fame Crisis
Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. Douglas MacArthur.
Swimmers never die, they just dissolve away; however, their signatures on the Wall of Fame do fade away. So, if you want to maintain your Wall of Fame immortality, it is up to you to find your name and add a little ink to it occasionally. At one point, volunteers were trying to help folks out by doing some restoration, but there are well over 10,000 names on the wall, and it’s not the Sistine Chapel. If your name fades completely, somebody will eventually take your spot.
Good luck in two weeks to the Orlando Underwater Hockey team. They’ll be playing in the state championships at the Rosen Aquatic Center at the Doc Lucky Meisenheimer Natatorium. Almost the entire team is made up of Lucky’s Lake Swimmers. Please do not show up to watch the tournament because underwater hockey is well known as the world’s number one worst spectator sport. The team is always looking to add new players; you should give it a try. However, we want to make it clear that we have no NIL money for you.
